Montagu, b\u00fct\u00fcn evlilik ya\u015fam\u0131 boyunca hi\u00e7bir \u015feye sahip olmad\u0131\u011f\u0131n\u0131, refah\u0131n\u0131n tamamen kocas\u0131n\u0131n c\u00f6mertli\u011fine ba\u011fl\u0131 oldu\u011funu ve hatta k\u0131z\u0131na b\u0131rakmak istedi\u011fi kendisine miras kalm\u0131\u015f m\u00fccevherleri bile do\u011frudan ona de\u011fil, damad\u0131na vermek zorunda oldu\u011funu \u00e7ok iyi biliyordu (Grundy 1999:558). Bir ba\u015fka y\u00fcksek d\u00fczey Osmanl\u0131 kad\u0131n\u0131 olan, \u201cvefat etmi\u015f Osmanl\u0131 Sultan\u0131 (II.) Mustafa\u2019n\u0131n (1695-1703) ikballerinden Hafsa Sultan\u0131\u201d* (Montagu 1993:113) ziyaretini anlat\u0131rken, Montagu, Hafsa Sultan\u0131 fazilet timsali olarak sunmaktad\u0131r. Padi\u015fah\u2019\u0131n vefat\u0131ndan sonra \u201c(Hafsa Sultan) H\u0131ristiyan \u00e2leminde \u00e7ok az bilinen bir sadakatle kesintisiz bir matem i\u00e7inde ge\u00e7irmektedir\u201d (Montagu 1993:114). Hafsa Sultan, Montagu\u2019nun erkek seyahat yazarlar\u0131 taraf\u0131ndan anlat\u0131lan imparatorluk haremine ili\u015fkin bir \u00e7ok kli\u015feye meydan okumas\u0131n\u0131n do\u011frudan kayna\u011f\u0131 haline geldi. \u00d6rne\u011fin; \u201cHafsa Sultan beni, Padi\u015fah\u0131n bir mendil f\u0131rlatmas\u0131 \u00f6yk\u00fcs\u00fcn\u00fcn tamamen uydurma oldu\u011fu konusunda temin etti\u201d (Montagu 1993:116).\u00a0 Bir sonraki ziyaretinde bu kez \u201csevgili dostum g\u00fczel Fatima\u2019n\u0131n saray\u0131na\u201d gidiyordu (Montagu 1993:118). Bana Edirne\u2019de iken bir \u00e7ok g\u00fczel s\u00f6z s\u00f6ylediniz, ama sizi bir daha hi\u00e7 g\u00f6remedim\u201d. Bir T\u00fcrk amirali taraf\u0131ndan yakalanan bir \u0130spanyol kad\u0131n, ailesinin fidye \u00f6deyerek bir manast\u0131ra teslim edilmesi talebine kar\u015f\u0131n, \u015ferefini kurtarmak i\u00e7in amiralin kendisiyle evlenmesini istedi.
